Format overview
What is a VOB file?
A VOB file is a Video Object in a DVD-Video structure. It multiplexes MPEG-2 video with audio, subtitles, navigation packs, and menu information. IFO files describe playback and navigation, while BUP files provide backups of key control data.
VOB files are often split near 1 GB boundaries. Opening one file may show only part of a title and can miss the intended chapter, angle, audio, or subtitle sequence.
Compatibility
VOB playback
DVD playback software reads the VIDEO_TS structure and follows its IFO navigation. General media players can open individual VOB files, but menu behavior, seamless joins, and track selection may differ from disc playback.
For reliable access, keep the complete VIDEO_TS folder instead of moving isolated VOB files.
Practical use
Convert a title or preserve the DVD?
Convert a DVD title to MP4, MKV, or MOV when you need a normal file for playback or editing. Load the disc or VIDEO_TS folder so the software can identify titles and join their VOB segments correctly.
Create a DVD folder or ISO when menus and the original structure matter. That is a backup workflow, not the same as converting one VOB file.
