What is an MPG file?
MPEG is the Moving Picture Experts Group, the standards body behind several media compression families. Files using .mpg or .mpeg commonly contain MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video in a program stream.
MPEG-1 was used for Video CD and early digital delivery. MPEG-2 is used by DVD-Video, broadcast systems, and many camera or editing workflows. The extension does not by itself distinguish the standard inside.
Compatibility
MPG playback and compatibility
Many desktop players can decode MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, although an operating system may not include every decoder by default. Editors can also reject program-stream variations, unusual audio, or damaged timestamps even when a player opens the file.
Inspect whether the source is MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 and identify its audio stream before choosing a replacement format.
Practical use
When should you convert MPG?
Convert MPG when a current phone, browser, TV, or editor does not accept the stream, or when H.264 or HEVC can provide a smaller delivery file. MP4 is a common playback target, while a current editing profile is better for timeline performance.
When preserving DVD material, remember that converting a single MPG title is different from keeping the complete menu and disc structure in an ISO or VIDEO_TS backup.
