What is XAVC?
XAVC is a Sony recording family built on H.264/AVC. Professional implementations can use MXF containers, intra-frame or long-GOP compression, high bitrates, 10-bit sampling, and 4:2:2 chroma for HD and 4K production.
XAVC is not one fixed file specification. Camera model, profile, resolution, frame rate, bit depth, chroma sampling, and container determine what an editor must support.

What is XAVC S?
XAVC S adapts the family for consumer and prosumer cameras. It commonly uses long-GOP H.264 video in an MP4 container with AAC or PCM audio. Some cameras record proxy files or related metadata beside the media.
Keep the full camera folder when copying cards so clip metadata and companion files remain available.
Practical use
Editing XAVC footage
Current editors support many XAVC profiles, but older hardware or software may struggle with high-resolution long-GOP media. If native editing is unreliable, transcode to ProRes, DNxHR, or another supported editing profile.
Do not convert solely because the extension is MXF or MP4. Identify the XAVC profile and test native performance first; unnecessary transcoding consumes time and storage.
