What is a MOV file?
MOV is part of the QuickTime file format family. Like MP4, it is based on an atom or box structure that stores media tracks and metadata. A MOV file may contain compact H.264 video, high-quality ProRes footage, alpha-channel animation, PCM audio, or other codecs.
The extension therefore does not reveal whether the file is intended for streaming, camera capture, graphics, or editing.

QuickTime Player and Apple editing applications support many common MOV combinations. Windows and Android software can also open MOV when the contained codecs are available. Problems often appear with professional codecs, alpha channels, unusual frame rates, or legacy QuickTime components.
If a player reports an unsupported MOV file, inspect the codec before changing the extension or converting it.
Practical use
Choosing MOV, MP4, or an editing profile
Use MOV when an editor, graphics workflow, or Apple application requires it. Use MP4 with H.264 or HEVC for smaller delivery files and broad playback. For Final Cut Pro and other production tools, select the application-specific editing profile rather than assuming every MOV preset is equivalent.
When converting, match the source frame rate and choose a resolution appropriate for the project timeline.
