What is an M3U8 file?
M3U8 is the UTF-8 version of the M3U playlist format. A playlist contains text directives and media locations. In HTTP Live Streaming, a master playlist can list several resolutions or bitrates, while media playlists identify the segments played in sequence.
Because the playlist is only an index, copying the .m3u8 file alone does not necessarily copy the video. Its segment URLs, audio renditions, subtitles, keys, and relative paths must remain reachable.
Compatibility
How to open M3U8 playlists
Current players with HLS support can open a remote playlist URL or a local playlist whose referenced files are present. A text editor can show the directives, but it does not play the media.
Playback can fail when segment URLs have expired, authentication is required, cross-origin access is blocked, encryption keys are unavailable, or the playlist references codecs the player cannot decode.
Practical use
Converting M3U8 media
To create a normal video file, the software must read the playlist and retrieve each permitted segment in order. LosslessConverter can load supported M3U8 links or folders; the source must remain accessible for the entire job.
Choose MP4 for a broadly compatible local file, or keep an HLS output when the destination is a streaming workflow. A playlist protected by access controls cannot be reconstructed without authorized access to its media and keys.
